When you write dialogue you are obeying two masters. You are fulfilling the need to convey information and you are also giving clues into the nature of the character speaking. The dialogue must not only move the story along, it must also tell us about the character speaking. Is he a sand hog or a rock star or a card shark? Is he angry or happy or depressed? Is he in a hurry or tired or nervous? Is he shifty or forthright or unsure? 38
